Speciality: Radiology

Role at hospital

Consultant musculoskeletal radiologist, 2001

Specialist interests

I set up the interventional musculoskeletal service for BNHFT and further developed musculoskeletal imaging in general.

Musculoskeletal radiology is the use of a wide variety of radiological equipment, such as scanners or x-ray image intensifiers to identify pathology of the bones, joints, tendons, ligaments and soft tissues.

I provide a variety of interventional musculoskeletal services which either help in the diagnosis of pathology or form part of a minimalist treatment regime where often the alternative treatment would be an operation. The interventional techniques I perform include:

  • Arthrography
  • Hydrodilatation
  • Joint injections
  • Tendon injections
  • Achilles paratenon injections
  • Calcium barbotage of the shoulder

Other roles

Administrator for The North Hampshire Radiology Private Practice Group
Additional information and comments

I served in the Armed Forces (Royal Army Medical Corps) for 17 years including 7 years as a consultant radiologist prior to my present appointment.

I was Head of Army Radiology as part of the Triservice Defence Medical Service. This involved the recruitment and management of military radiologists and radiographers in the UK. My responsibilities also included maintaining and developing radiological services for a war time role in field hospitals.

As part of the Defence Medical Service's Risk Management Strategy I was involved in developing an award winning telemedicine and teleradiology service centred in the department. This provided a fast consultant based service to military doctors on ships and foreign shore based medical facilities. I was the lead consultant for our teleradiology link with the Cyprus based medical service.

During the 7 years since I was appointed in Basingstoke I have achieved and undertaken the following:

  • 2 years as clinical director radiology
  • 2 years as clinical tutor radiology
  • 2 years as PACS radiology lead
