Breast screening

NHS England announced on 2 May that a number of older women are to be offered a catch-up breast screen, because they didn’t get the invitation to their final screen. This was caused by a problem in the screening IT system run by NHS Breast Screening Services.   Public Health England and the Department of Health have apologies that some women did not receive their invitation. Most women can be reassured that they will have received their final invitation, sometime between their 68th and 71st birthdays. All affected women registered with a GP will be written to by the end of May with further information. A helpline is also available on 0800 169 2692.

The problem affected women who were due their final screen when aged between 68 -71 (the screening programme works on a three-yearly cycle, so some women will receive an invitation when they are 68 and others when older, but the interval between invitations should be approximately three years). Some women aged between 70 and 79 are being offered the opportunity for a breast screen. The offer of a screen comes after some women did not receive an invitation for a final screen, as part of the routine NHS Breast Screening Programme, which invites women every three years aged 50 -70 (up to their 71st birthday).
