Physiotherapy

Outpatients

In outpatients we treat patients with musculoskeletal problems who have been referred to us by GP’s and Consultants. You will be assessed by one of our team who will explain their findings to you so you have an understanding of your problem. In most cases you will be given a regime of exercises to work on at home. It is important you do these regularly as instructed. Depending on your condition you may also have some hands-on treatment (such as joint mobilizations or soft tissue massage), acupuncture or electrotherapy.

We follow the most up to date research evidence and regularly review how effective we are by completing outcome measures with all patients.

We also have hydrotherapy pools (at Basingstoke and Winchester) a specialist hand therapy service and a number of classes that run in our gyms specifically designed to help the recovery of patients with a variety of musculoskeletal conditions.

At the end of your course of treatment a report will be sent to the doctor that referred you to update them on your progress.

We have clinicians working a variety of hours between the times below

Winchester

Monday to Friday 7.45am-5pm

Alton

Inpatients

On our wards we have physiotherapists working in a number of specialities across the trust, from orthopaedics to intensive care. We work to rehabilitate our patients recovering from elective surgery, emergency surgery and a variety of other medical problems leading to hospitalisation.

Each area is headed by an experienced physiotherapist who is responsible for co-ordinating a team of more junior physiotherapists and physiotherapy assistants. The teams work independently in their respective clinical areas as well as with each other to ensure knowledge and skills are shared so optimum care is provided to all patients.

We work as part of a multi-disciplinary team to work towards a safe and appropriate planned discharged goal. In a number of areas we run a 7 day service to maintain continuity of care for our patients.

What is physiotherapy?

Physiotherapy helps restore movement and function when someone is affected by injury, illness or disability.

Physiotherapists help people affected by injury, illness or disability through movement and exercise, manual therapy, education and advice.

They help people of all ages maintain health, helping patients to manage pain and prevent disease.

We help to encourage people to progress and facilitate their recovery, enabling people to stay in work while helping them to remain independent for as long as possible.

What do physiotherapists do?

Physiotherapy is a science-based profession and takes a ‘whole person’ approach to health and wellbeing, which includes the patient’s general lifestyle.

At the core is the patient’s involvement in their own care, through education, awareness, empowerment and participation in their treatment.

You can benefit from physiotherapy at any time in your life.

Physiotherapy is a degree-based healthcare profession. Physiotherapists use their knowledge and skills to improve a range of conditions associated with different systems of the body, such as:

  • Neurological (stroke, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's)
  • Neuromusculoskeletal (back pain, whiplash associated disorder, sports injuries, arthritis)
  • Cardiovascular (chronic heart disease, rehabilitation after heart attack)
  • Respiratory (asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, cystic fibrosis).

Hampshire Hospitals NHS foundation trust has fully qualified physiotherapists and assistants working in a number of locations including, Basingstoke, Winchester, Alton and Bishops Waltham, supporting patient in their local community.
