Respiratory (Chest Medicine)

The Department of Respiratory Medicine treats patients with a variety of acute and chronic respiratory conditions. We are a cohesive multidisciplinary team that work across Basingstoke and Winchester which are our main hospital sites. In addition to this we provide respiratory outpatient clinics in Andover, Eastleigh, Romsey and Alton. To ensure a smooth positive patient pathway we work closely with other teams, services and professionals, both internally and externally to the trust. As well as links with local community respiratory teams, we also have professional links with the respiratory department at John Radcliffe Hospital, Southampton General Hospital and Royal Brompton Hospital.

What we do

The team provide inpatient respiratory care which includes Non-Invasive Ventilation on the Winchester and Basingstoke sites. As well as regular general outpatient clinics in a variety of locations, we also provide a range of outpatient respiratory services on both of our main hospital sites. This includes diagnostic fibre optic bronchoscopy, medical thoracoscopy, and PleurX drain insertion. We provide a full range of pulmonary function testing which include cardiopulmonary exercise testing and fitness to fly testing.

We have well established Lung Cancer, COPD, Obstructive Sleep Apnoea and TB services, which are fully supported by our Clinical Nurse Specialists.

We are currently developing our links with community services to improve the care pathway for COPD patients. We plan to provide more specialist clinics and services in particular we are working to provide an EBUS service.
