Ambulatory Care Unit (ACU)

ACUAmbulatory care is an innovative way of providing a safe, patient focus, flexible, same day emergency service for appropriate patients. The service aims to prevent unnecessary hospital admission and provide a better patient’s experience.

Our Ambulatory Care Unit (ACU) offers easy access to early diagnostic tests, specialist staff, and review by a hospital consultant in one place. This is not a pathway or condition-led service that ensures all patients can be considered. All patients must be referred and clinically accepted by ACU team.

Patients are referred from:

  • GP
  • A&E
  • Wards (as part of support network to facilitate early discharge)

ACU is located in A&E next to short stay ward at Basingstoke hospital.

On arrival patients will be booked in and seated in the waiting area. Then initial assessment with a nurse and medical doctor will take place, suitable investigations will be arranged and reviewed with the medical consultant and instigate appropriate treatment.  The ultimate aim is to facilitate safe and appropriate discharge home. If however, admission is required the ACU team will arrange a bed in Acute Admission Unit or the most appropriate medical ward.

If patients are concerned once they return home, they are advised to contact ACU directly during working hours between 09:00 – 17:00 Monday to Friday, on 01256 473202 ext 43017. If outside these hours then patients are advice to contact the out of hours GP service.
