D4 (Trauma Orthopaedics)

Trauma patients are those admitted with musculo-skeletal injuries (i.e. broken bones), as urgent or emergency cases. They are admitted under the care of the consultant on call, one of 10 consultants who cover a 24-hour, seven day-a-week rota.

We welcome patients to our ward with a friendly, open approach. We encourage an holistic system of care involving patients, their families, and/or carers. The multi-disciplinary orthopaedic team are all involved in the treatment of our patients. We use our expert knowledge and work closely together to ensure the best possible care is given.

Our orthopedic team includes nurses, doctors, physiotherapists and occupational therapists. We are aware of the frustrations and limitations that many of the injuries we treat can cause, but we actively encourage patient independence, mobility and activity. As soon as is safely possible our patients are discharged home, or to community hospitals for rehabilitation.

Our staff are encouraged to keep updated with modern trends and research in the orthopaedic area. Research-based practice enhances the quality of care given and projects are ongoing within the ward.
