Our Hospitals

Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust came into being on 9 January 2012 as the result of the integration of Basingstoke and North Hampshire NHS Foundation Trust and Winchester and Eastleigh Healthcare Trust.

Andover War Memorial Hospital

Andover War Memorial Hospital opened in 1926 as a replacement for the town’s cottage hospital. At the time Andover was a small town of around 17,000 but it expanded rapidly in the second half of the 20th century.

The War Memorial Hospital has expanded similarly. Newer parts of the hospital provide in-patient rehabilitation, maternity services, a day surgery unit and a minor injuries unit, while a new outpatient unit opened in 2010.

The site also houses the Countess of Brecknock Hospice, which provides six in-patient beds, day care, and a base for Macmillan Nurses.

The Minor Injuries Unit in Andover is lead by Emergency Nurse Practitioners who are experienced in treating minor injuries and illnesses. This unit is presently open from 8:30am to 7.30pm, seven days a week, and is also supported by x-ray facilities between 8.30am and 5pm, Monday to Friday. Please note there are no dental facilities.

The opening hours at Andover’s Minor Injuries Unit have been temporarily reduced to ensure a safe service at a period of insufficient numbers of appropriate staff including vacancies in the numbers of highly trained Emergency Nurse Practitioners who work in the Andover MIU and in our two Emergency Departments in Winchester and Basingstoke. The intention is to return to normal opening hours as soon as possible.

Basingstoke and North Hampshire Hospital

Building work for Basingstoke District Hospital began in 1969 and it opened in 1974. The hospital had cost £7.5million to build - the amount spent 30 years later to create a Diagnosis and Treatment Centre (DTC) on the site. Both the main hospital and DTC were opened officially by HRH Princess Alexandra.

Basingstoke and North Hampshire Hospital has around 450 beds and provides a full range of planned and emergency services. These include specialist services for rare or complex illnesses for patients across the UK, including liver cancer, colorectal cancer and pseudomyxoma peritonei (a rare lower abdominal cancer).

The purpose built Diagnosis and Treatment Centre (DTC) opened in 2005.

The regional haemophilia service is based at Basingstoke and North Hampshire Hospital and we also have links with University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust, Frimley Park Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, Royal Surrey County Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and Royal Brompton and Harefield NHS Foundation Trust for some specialised services.

In 1999 it became the first hospital in Europe to perform surgery using equipment operated by voice commands.
