The eye day care unit (EDCU) was formed in 2002, by bringing together the Ophthalmic Day Surgery Ward and Ophthalmic Theatre.

This dedicated ophthalmic unit is staffed with a multi skilled team of registered nurses, Anesthetic Nurse Practitioners, Health Care Assistants and Administrators. We are committed to offer you quality care and excellent customer service, and ensuring you have a comfortable and positive experience within the EDCU.

The main function of the EDCU is to provide ophthalmic day surgery for adults. All surgery is carried out under local anaesthetic. Any patient requiring a general anaesthetic will have their surgery carried out either in Main Theatre on ‘C’ level or in the Diagnostic and Treatment (DTC) theatres. In these situations a team from the EDCU theatre will be present.

The EDCU runs clinics and theatre session daily. It has one theatre providing elective surgery and private patient services for:

  • Cataract Surgery
  • Trabeculectomy/Glaucoma Surgery
  • Oculoplastic Surgery

Our Weekly Clinics include:

  • Laser
  • Intravitreal injections/DMO/CRVO/BRVO
  • Pre-assessment for surgery
  • Post-surgical assessment
  • Minor operations
  • Botox injections
  • General ophthalmology outpatients
  • Telephone Triage for Eye Emergency Clinic (EEC)

Ophthalmic Unit Philosophy of Nursing Care

As a team, we shall strive at all times to deliver the highest possible standard of nursing care taking into account the following:

  • Our dedicated trained professionals will endeavour to implement a programme of holistic care, taking into account all aspects of the individual patient’s age, physical, spiritual and social wellbeing. We will respect individuality; each patient is different and will be treated as such.
  • We will act in partnership with the patient and their family to negotiate a programme of care that is acceptable to them and suitable for their clinical condition. Effective ophthalmic care aims to optimise the level of wellbeing in clients and promote their independence.
  • Provide consultancy to colleagues and other organisations wishing to develop services for people with ophthalmic needs.
  • In order to maintain the highest possible standards of care, the management of the EDCU recognizes that it is necessary to maintain an environment conducive to learning across the multi-disciplinary team. All staff will adopt a professional approach to the delivery of care demanded by their respective professional bodies.
