Dermatology Advice and Guidance +/- Photos Service in Mid Hants area

We are pleased to announce that the Advice and Guidance +/- Photos element of the West Hants CCG Community Dermatology (Mid Hants) Service is now available

For use by GPs in the Mid Hants area. Click here for list of GP surgeries in the Mid Hants area.

This service is available in two formats:

  • Straightforward advice and guidance requests (no pictures) via the E Referrals (choose and book) system for the West Hants CCG Community Dermatology (Mid Hants) Service, which will be reviewed and responded to by the community GPSI.  Just tick the advice and guidance box on the relevant service directory and upload your referral letter/text.

  • Via email using if attaching a photo for review.  The advice and guidance plus photo service will be provided by four dermatology consultants from the Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust secondary care service.  This service is run via a dedicated account to ensure patient confidentiality is maintained.  Consent must be gained by the GP from the patient prior to sending through any requests.  Reference to this consent needs to be included in the e-mail.

There are no forms to fill out so the e-mail must provide a brief clinical summary with photo/s attached and the patient’s NHS Number in the subject title of the e-mail. A response email will be sent with a management plan or requesting further information if required.

Clinical photographs can be taken in the consultation using a home/practice digital camera or smartphone (>3 mega pixel, with flash and ‘close up’ function). If possible a ruler held against a lesion, to indicate size is helpful, along with confirmation of other lesions/rashes elsewhere on the body.

The Advice and Guidance +/- Photos service can be used to:

  • Obtain rapid diagnosis and management advice from a consultant dermatologist or GPSI
  • Triage patients with basal cell carcinomas for skin surgery - patients will be sent preoperative information in the post and booked directly onto an appropriate surgical list, avoiding the need for a dermatology clinic appointment.

  • 2-week wait skin cancer referrals (suspected melanoma and squamous cell carcinoma)

There will be an on-going review of the implementation and success of this service and any feedback will be appreciated on how it can be improved.

Please send any queries or feedback with regard to this service to or contact the dermatology community co-ordinator on 01962 824157.
