I am a consultant obstetrician and gynaecologist and have been working at Basingstoke and North Hampshire Hospital since July 1991. I have weekly out patient clinics in maternity and gynaecology and general operating sessions both in main theatres and the diagnosis and treatment centre (DTC).
I have a weekly session as consultant on call for labour ward and participate in the consultant on call rota. I am lead clinician for colposcopy and gynaecological cancer and have outpatient clinics and operating sessions to support these activities. I am also cancer lead clinician for the Foundation Trust.
I am lead clinician for colposcopy and gynaecological cancer and run these services for the Foundation Trust
The colposcopy clinic is a dedicated outpatient facility for the investigation and treatment of women who have had an abnormal cervical smear test. The whole purpose of this clinic is the prevention of cervical cancer by the early detection and treatment of pre cancerous changes.
I was responsible for the introduction and development of the gynaecological cancer unit at the hospital. In so doing I introduced weekly rapid access clinics for the assessment of women with suspected gynaecological cancer. We are now able to carry out initial investigations such as ultrasound, colposcopy, hysteroscopy and ultrasound guided biopsy at the first clinic visit for rapid assessment and treatment planning.
Most of the women referred to us do not have cancer but all are worried. A major benefit of this service is that we are able to see women quickly and for the majority offer reassurance. For the minority who are found to have cancer we are able to complete investigations and treatment without delay.
The unit works in close collaboration with the Cancer Centre in Southampton where I am also an honorary consultant. I am a member of the Southampton MDT and am responsible for coordinating care of patients treated at both centres as well as carrying out some of the surgery for gynaecological malignancy in Basingstoke.
I am cancer lead clinician for the Foundation Trust and am responsible for overseeing service delivery as well as ensuring compliance with IOG standards, delivery on waiting time targets and advising the Foundation Trust on strategic development in line with national policy.
