Dr Matthew Brown, Consultant Physician and Gastroenterologist
Specialist interest
Dr Brown is a general Gastroenterologist caring for patients with diseases of the gut and liver. Dr Brown underwent specialist training in the Wessex Deanery and undertook a subspecialty research PhD in the NIHR Nottingham Digestive Diseases Centre Biomedical Research Unit. This research fellowship involved the study of the causes of the inflammatory bowel diseases, Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis.
Dr Brown performs diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy of both the upper and lower GI tracts (gastroscopy, flexible sigmoidoscopy and colonoscopy) and undertakes a range of procedures including emergency treatment of acute gastrointestinal bleeding, variceal banding, polypectomy, oesophageal dilatation, percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) insertion and argon plasma coagulation.
Dr Brown is responsible for the care of inpatients with gastroenterological and general medical problems. He works as part of a multidisciplinary team, consisting of dieticians, pharmacists, therapists, specialist nurses and junior doctors to provide comprehensive care of patients who require medical and nutritional support. Dr Brown is involved both in the care of acute general medical patients and in providing a comprehensive 24 hour emergency gastroenterology and endoscopy service, 7 days a week.
Dr Brown is responsible for the care of outpatients with a variety of gastroenterological problems and has a subspecialist interest in inflammatory bowel diseases. This service involves the use of complex treatments including immunosuppressive and biological therapies, and has close links with the supporting departments of General Surgery, Pathology, Oncology and Radiology. Dr Brown is also involved in the care of patients with general gastroenterological disorders, including irritable bowel syndrome, constipation, diarrhoea, gastro-oesophageal reflux disease, coeliac disease, gastrointestinal cancer, pancreatic disease, malnutrition and chronic liver diseases.

Additional information
Dr Brown qualified from the University of Bristol with a first class BSc honours degree in Anatomy in 1998 and subsequently received his Medical Degree from the University of Bristol Medical School with honours in 2001. Following his basic medical training in Bristol, Dr Brown became a member of the Royal College of Physicians of London in 2004. Dr Brown undertook his specialist training in Gastroenterology in the Wessex Deanery. During his specialist training, Dr Brown undertook a 3 year research degree at the Queen's Medical Centre, Nottingham, where he was awarded his PhD from the University of Nottingham for his work into mucosal immunology in inflammatory bowel diseases in 2012. Dr Brown was accredited as a Gastroenterologist and General Internal Physician in 2013.
