The main ultrasound services are located at Basingstoke and North Hampshire Hospital and Royal Hampshire County Hospital. Some services are available at Andover War Memorial Hospital.
Ultrasound scans are familiar for their use in imaging during pregnancy but they are actually far more widely used. A small handheld probe is positioned on your body and high frequency sound waves are used to produce live images of the body for the Sonographer or Radiologist to interpret. The scan usually takes between 10 and 20 minutes depending on the part of the body being imaged. Certain procedures can take longer but this will be outlined in your appointment letter.
If your GP or consultant decides you need an ultrasound scan, you will normally receive a letter in the post with an appointment date and time. It is important that you let us know if you are unable to attend.
Preparation varies between scans; some require no preparation whereas many scans of the lower abdomen require you to have a full bladder. Your appointment letter will tell you this or give you further details where applicable. You may also be asked to change into a hospital gown. It may be helpful to wear loose fitting clothing.
There are no known safety concerns with the use of ultrasound by a trained operator. Unlike some other forms of imaging there is no use of ionising radiation.
This will depend on who referred you for the scan. Your consultant or GP may arrange a follow up appointment or write to you.
