We have a number of volunteering roles available across our three sites of Basingstoke, Winchester and Andover for those who want to make a difference with us here at Hampshire Hospitals.

Below you will find each of the roles you can do and their descriptions, alongside minimum age requirements, training and location. Our friendly volunteers team are available to chat to should you have any questions or want to find out some more information - please find their contact details below.

The role of an admin volunteer is to assist teams with administration tasks - providing additional support to the team during busy periods. Your role may include photocopying documents, stock taking and restocking supplies where required, organising workspaces, keeping surfaces clear and tidy, filing, taking letters to the post room; to name a few.

The minimum age requirement for this role is 17 years and hours will depend on the department you volunteer in.

This is a role available at all hospital sites.

The Rainbow Unit administers outpatient chemotherapy and supportive therapy. Volunteers provide support to the staff, patients, and relatives on the unit. The role will involve meeting and greeting/signposting patients to reception/clinics, visiting/befriending patients, providing refreshments and collecting or delivering items to other departments.

To do this role, you must be aged 21 years and above and must not be going through cancer treatment, have had treatment in the last two years or have been bereaved in the last two years.

This role is available at Basingstoke Hospital and Royal County Hampshire Hospital.

Cardiac rehabilitation volunteers are involved in helping to support our cardiac patients, who come to take part in our rehabilitation programme. Your role will involve welcoming patients in a friendly manner, assisting with the setting up of the individual stations and helping to clean and sanitise the equipment. You will help the patients to take their pulse, if needed, and guide them with an exercise if they are having difficulties. 

This is a role available at all three hospital sites as well as Alton Community Hospital. Our rehab clinics tend to run on a weekday morning.

Volunteers must be aged 18 years and above for this role.

The role of a chaplaincy support volunteer is to provide spiritual care for patients, families, carers, and staff as part of the trust community. Where appropriate this support may also involve assisting with religious/faith needs. As a chaplaincy volunteer you will be available to listen to and talk with patients, provide appropriate spiritual and pastoral support to patients and their relatives and support staff as appropriate.

You will be supported by our chaplaincy team and will be required to attend an interview with them, initially, before being accepted for the role.

This is a role available at all hospital sites.

As a charity volunteer, you would be part of a group of individuals helping out at fundraising events and activities with our NHS charity, Hampshire Hospitals Charity.Tasks might include attending a stand at a local fair, supporting fundraisers at local marathons and helping at workshops. Opportunities that arise would be sent out via email where you can opt-in or opt-out each time.

As a volunteer, you would help to raise funds and the profile of the charity within your local community.

Each year, the charity raises funds to help support our patients, staff and volunteers at HHFT. The work you do would help the charity to continue to fund equipment, refurbishments, staffing, welfare initiatives and so much more.

This role is available on an ad-hoc basis, with no minimum weekly hours required. Should you wish to give regular hours, there is the opportunity to volunteer with our charity team to assist with admin tasks.

Support the Sustainability team to deliver the actions set out in the Trust’s Green Plan.  The Green Plan aims to deliver a programme of projects that will reduce the environmental impact of Trust activity, moving towards a culture of Sustainable Healthcare that protects people and planet. The aim is to deliver high-quality care whilst simultaneously reducing workplace contributions to climate change. 


This role is available at Basingstoke and Winchester.

Our palliative care team provide a volunteer befriending service, which involves volunteers visiting patients in the community who have a life limiting or chronic illness and are lonely or isolated. As a community befriending volunteer, you will be matched with a patient who you will visit on a regular basis, for up to two hours a week. You will be there to provide companionship and company. You will be supervised and supported by our palliative care volunteer manager.

This role is available in Andover, Winchester, Basingstoke and Alton areas.

Within Hampshire Hospitals, we have an amazing dementia team, who help support dementia patients on our wards. As a dementia volunteer, you will be assigned to a ward and will be given extra training on how help support dementia patients. You need to have a caring and patient manner and will be supported by our dementia team.

As a dementia volunteer, we are happy for you to come in for a couple of hours, either in the morning or afternoon.

This role is available at all hospital sites.

The primary role of the Emergency Department (ED) Support Volunteer would be to form part of the dedicated team of volunteers offering support to staff and non-medical assistance to patients accessing our emergency services. ED can be extremely busy, and you may witness situations that you have not encountered before.  The ED staff will ensure that you are shielded from critical areas as much as possible.

 

Our ED support volunteers must be aged 21 and above as this is a very busy and, sometimes a stressful environment to volunteer in. 

This role is available at Basingstoke and Winchester hospitals.

 

Our emergency departments (ED) can be very busy places and for our frail patients, quite an overwhelming environment, especially if they are there alone. As a frailty support volunteer, you will be guided by our frailty team, who will make you aware of any patients in the ED who would benefit from someone sitting with them; making sure they have had a drink and something to eat, especially if they are there for many hours on their own.

Our ED frailty support volunteers must be aged 21 and above as this is a very busy and, sometimes a stressful environment to volunteer in. 

This role is available at Basingstoke and Winchester hospitals.

Our hospitals and hospices are all surrounded by grounds that require a lot of care and attention.

Volunteers help to maintain these areas with practical tasks such as watering, putting in bedding plants, keeping gardens free of litter, pruning and the usual garden chores. The times you can volunteer are very flexible.

This role is available at all hospital sites.

The role of the health promotion volunteer is to use the Making Every Contact Count (MECC) philosophy to have open question conversations with our patients in our outpatient waiting areas, to support them in making positive changes to their physical and mental health and wellbeing. The role will involve you meeting and greeting patients in our outpatient department, encouraging patients to complete the One You health quiz and having open question conversations with patients in the outpatient waiting areas using the MECC behavioural change conversation skills.

This is a role available at Winchester hospital.

The Health Information Point (HiP) is a confidential information service for patients, relatives, carers, and staff of Hampshire Hospitals.The service is free to anyone who has a query about hospital services, diseases, tests, treatments, support groups, healthy lifestyles and so on. 

It is managed by the Health Information manager, assisted by a team of specially trained volunteers. The service is based within the front entrance of the hospital and has been open to the public since December 2009. The HiP is open Monday to Friday between 10am to 4pm.

As a HiP volunteer you should have good basic computer skills and be confident using the internet. Above all, we are looking for friendly, outgoing people over the age of 18, who enjoy helping others.

This role is available at Basingstoke hospital.

As a volunteer in our maternity department, your role will be to help our staff during mealtimes and be an extra pair of hands on the ward. You may be making cups of tea for patients and visitors, helping staff with stock replenishment, talking to patients or running errands for the ward clerk. It is important that you understand that your role will not involve handling babies.

The shifts available are usually two or three hours in an afternoon or early evening.

Volunteers must be aged 18 years and above for this role.

Our meet and greet volunteers help by greeting visitors to our hospitals. In a large hospital it is easy to become lost, and our meet and greet volunteers will help people find where they need to go. You do not need any specific skills except a friendly manner – though a good sense of direction always helps!

The meet and greet role has four available shifts: 8:30am – 10:30am, 10:30am – 12:30pm, 12:30pm – 2:30pm and 2:30pm – 4:30pm. 

This role is available at Basingstoke and Andover hospitals.

A patient clothing support volunteer will provide practical support in the sorting and categorising of donated clothing items ready for easy access by staff for patient use. The role will involve sorting through existing clothing and tidy the sections in their categories- size, type (trousers, skirts and so on).

This is role available at Winchester hospital.

As a Patient Research Ambassador (PRA) you can help the NHS become more research active through any one or more of the following examples:

  • Raising awareness of research at HHFT to patients, carers and the local community at events organised by the trust
  • Supporting national initiatives and national awareness days to promote the research agenda for specific campaigns e.g. Breast Cancer Awareness Month
  • Creating patient friendly information about research
  • Meet and greet trial participants when they come in for appointments, bring them refreshments and keep them company as required
  • Talking with patients about how healthcare could be provided in future to reflect changing needs and preferences to then feedback ideas and concerns to the trust to inform our improvement programmes
  • Assist doctors to create patient-friendly research studies
  • Identify avenues for sharing best practice for public involvement in research
  • Assist with research staff training to promote quality research
  • Highlight ‘good news stories’ about patient and public involvement in research

As a reception volunteer, you will be in position to welcome people into the department, signpost to various areas, answer the telephone and take messages as well as some general admin tasks.

The shifts for this role are usually two or three hours in a morning, afternoon or evening, weekdays or weekends.

Volunteers must be aged 18 and above when volunteering in our hospices.

This is a role that is currently available at Andover and Basingstoke hospital as well as at Winchester Hospice and Countess of Brecknock Hospice in Andover.

You will be working with our supplies team, helping to support the collation of hospital supplies and then distributing these around the hospital. This is an active role and is only suitable for people who are physically mobile and able to move around the hospital. The shift pattern for this role is 9am till 12pm, weekdays only.

This is a role available at Winchester hospital. 

The role of a ward activity volunteer is to assist staff with rehabilitation activities for patients. You may be involved with many activities such as playing games/board games, reading, word activities, scanning activities and puzzles with patients.

This role tends to require volunteers to come in for 2 or 3 hours, mid-morning or afternoon.

This is a role that is available at Winchester hospital, mainly on our stroke wards.

Our ward support volunteers are a great asset to our wards. They volunteer over a mealtime and help to distribute meal trays, encourage patients to eat, assist patients who need more help and then work with the staff to clear up.  Ward volunteers also have time to sit and chat with any patients who would love a bit of company. Our shifts are centred around a mealtime: breakfast 8am – 10am, lunchtime 12pm – 2pm and dinnertime 5pm – 7pm.

You will be given mealtime training and offered dementia training as an extra, too.

Available at all hospital sites including Winchester Hospice.
