Celebrating 75 years of the NHS

Published on: 5 July 2023

Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (HHFT) is joining the celebrations to recognise the 75th birthday of the National Health Service!

The trust will mark 75 years of the NHS on Wednesday 5 July, looking back on and celebrating its incredible history and achievements, as well as the important role Hampshire Hospitals and its staff have played within that, caring for local communities across north and mid Hampshire.

The occasion will also provide an opportunity to look ahead to the future with innovation and improvement at the forefront of the trust’s future projects, including the new hospital programme, elective hub facility and expansion of other services across the organisation.

A range of NHS75 themed activities will take place to mark the occasion, including across the trust’s hospital sites located in Andover, Basingstoke and Winchester, with the local community and HHFT colleagues encouraged to get involved and show their support.

NHS75 events and activities

  • On Wednesday 5 July, HHFT staff members are invited to an NHS Big Tea event hosted by Hampshire Hospitals Charity at each of the trust’s hospital sites, with tea and biscuits available for staff to raise a mug to celebrate NHS colleagues across the country.
  • On Friday 7 July, the public and NHS colleagues can ‘Wear It Blue’ by digging out a favourite blue item of clothing to sport for the day and making a small charitable donation to support Hampshire Hospitals Charity, celebrating and recognising local NHS services whilst raising all-important funds. Visit hampshirehospitalscharity.org to find out more.
  • On Saturday 8 July, the public and NHS staff alike are being encouraged to come together with friends or colleagues to join their local parkrun, all to support the NHS – head to www.parkrun.org.uk and register to join in.

Alex Whitfield, chief executive of Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, said: “It’s fantastic to be celebrating this special milestone and to be able to show our appreciation for the wonderful colleagues and teams that make up our NHS.

“Each person within the HHFT family, be it clinical or non-clinical, plays a vital role in delivering the care that our patients and their loved ones need, and we’re excited to be able to recognise their incredible work as part of the NHS’ 75th birthday.”

Alongside the host of events and activities taking place throughout the week, Hampshire Hospitals is also marking NHS75 by announcing details of its 2023 Annual General Meeting (AGM), with an online event taking place on Thursday 21 September from 7pm.

This year’s AGM, which will be based upon the theme of ‘Empowering Patients, Enhancing Care: Delivering for Our Communities’, will feature an agenda of speakers as well as a presentation of the trust’s annual report and accounts. For more information and to secure your place, visit our event page.

Founded in 1948, the NHS was the first universal health system to be available to all, free at the point of delivery. Since then, the NHS has innovated and adapted to meet the needs of each generation. Every day, the NHS treats over a million people in England.
