Rosie Dicks, specialist nurse for organ donation has represented Hampshire Hospitals at the British Transplant Games, which took place in Oxford over the weekend of July 31st until August 3rd.
Rosie took part in the Donor Run – a 5km fun run in the grounds of Blenheim Palace. After a couple of months of training, Rosie was delighted to compete alongside 2000 of her colleagues, living donors, donor families and organ recipients.
As a specialist nurse working alongside our critical care colleagues, Rosie plays an extremely important role in working with patients who could be potential organ donors, and their families.
Rosie says: “I was delighted to represent Hampshire Hospitals at the Games which are a fantastic opportunity to celebrate the life-giving nature of organ donation while encouraging people to remain fit and healthy.
“I’ve enjoyed training for the run and I hope I have made everyone proud. Just to have been at the Games among recipients, donors, and families, has been an inspiring experience.”
Dr Stephen Duckworth, chair of the Hampshire Hospitals organ donation committee says: “We are all very proud of Rosie.
“Sport is so important for bringing people together and encouraging an active lifestyle; and these games are an incredibly valuable opportunity for highlighting how organ donation gives people a chance to live life successfully.
“The games also provide an opportunity for people to have the conversation with their loved ones so that, in the event the worst happens, a person’s wish to become a donor can be fulfilled.”
The British Transplant Games saw 974 competitors take part in 26 events watched by nearly 1,500 spectators.
Organisers of the games, Transplant Active – formerly known as Transplant Sport - have spent four decades encouraging transplant recipients, living donors and donor families to celebrate the gift of life through sport.
