Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust’s state-of-the-art surgical hub, Hampshire Orthopaedic Centre, is celebrating a successful first year after treating more than 1,200 patients and achieving national accreditation for excellence in surgical care.

Since opening in September 2025, Hampshire Orthopaedic Centre has treated over 1,200 patients from across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight, helping people access planned orthopaedic surgery more quickly.

The purpose-built centre, based at the Royal Hampshire County Hospital in Winchester, has increased the Trust’s capacity for elective care, providing treatment for adults requiring procedures such as hip and knee replacements. As a result, the Trust’s waiting lists for hip and knee replacement surgery have seen an average reduction of five weeks.

The specialist facility has also achieved an impressive 41% day-case rate in its first 12 months – which is among the highest in the country – meaning many patients are able to return home on the same day as their procedure after a hip or knee replacement, while almost 9 in 10 patients return home within 24 hours. HOC Peter.png

By operating separately from emergency services, the hub is protected from many of the pressures affecting acute hospital sites, helping to reduce cancellations, improve patient flow and enhance patient experience. Consultants from both Hampshire Hospitals and University Hospital Southampton (UHS) operate at the facility which is used exclusively for this planned care.

In July this year, Hampshire Orthopaedic Centre also received national accreditation through NHS England's Getting It Right First Time (GIRFT) surgical hub accreditation programme, recognising its high standards of patient care, clinical quality and operational performance.

Frances Woodroffe, Chief Operating Officer at Hampshire Hospitals, said: “Facilities like the Hampshire Orthopaedic Centre are incredibly important for our patients and communities. Every day we see first-hand how life-changing orthopaedic surgery can be and these positive outcomes are a testament to the dedication of our staff and teams, whose outstanding work is improving the quality of life for people across the region.”

Since the facility’s opening, patient feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, with every one of the 270 patient responses received during the first quarter of 2026/27 rating their experience positively. HOC 1000 patient 1.jpg

Iris Osborne, who was the 1,000th patient treated at the Hampshire Orthopaedic Centre, said: “I had a fall and from then on, the pain got so bad, I could hardly walk – I even had to get a wheelchair for my operation. The orthopaedic centre is so clean and bright, and the staff can’t do enough for you. When you’ve had a lot of pain, and then suddenly there isn’t any, you think thank goodness for that – it’s amazing.”
