Children undergoing treatment at Basingstoke and North Hampshire Hospital now have the opportunity to travel around in style.
Thanks to a donation of an Tesla Model S electric car, young patients with long-term conditions, such as cystic fibrosis will be able to use the new wheels to travel to different parts of the hospital.
It is hoped that the cars will make the children feel more at ease, and make it easier for them to stay active whilst in hospital.
The donation came from Alex and Marion Hamilton, who live in Hatch Warren, and are part of the Tesla owners club. So far, more than 100 model cars have been donated to hospitals across the country to help put a smile on the faces of unwell children.
Asma Abbass, the clinical lead for the children’s ward at Basingstoke hospital, said: “We are so thankful to Alex, Marion and the Tesla owners club for such a generous donation. Making sure that our patients are up and moving plays a really important part in their recovery and this will make a real difference in encouraging patients to spend more time out of bed.
“Hospitals can be scary, especially for younger patients, and our play specialists think of new fun, engaging ways to support our young patients every day. The car will bring real excitement to the ward. All of the staff are looking forward to seeing the car in action and building it into how we care for our patients. Maybe we will think about installing traffic lights on the ward!”
Alex and Marion, added: “It’s been wonderful to be able to make this donation to our local hospital. All of the staff do such a fantastic job, anything we can do to help support them is worthwhile.”
