Women giving birth at Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (HHFT) report high levels of confidence, trust and “kind and compassionate” care, according to a new national maternity survey.
The results of the 2025 Maternity Survey, part of the patient survey programme co-ordinated by the Care Quality Commission (CQC), sees Hampshire Hospitals rank 6th out of 55 organisations who took part in the survey with the same provider.
The survey asked those who gave birth between 22 April and 15 July 2025 to answer questions about their experience of the care and treatment they received. 153 patients cared for at Hampshire Hospitals responded to the survey, with answers for each question converted into a score which shows the percentage of respondents who gave a favourable response to applicable questions.
Hampshire Hospitals, which runs maternity services at Andover War Memorial Hospital, Basingstoke and North Hampshire Hospital and Royal Hampshire County Hospital, in Winchester, scored well above the survey average in a number of questions, with some notable highlights including:
- 99% of women felt they were treated with respect and dignity during labour and birth.
- 99% of women felt they were treated with kindness and compassion during labour and birth.
- 99% of women felt involved enough in decisions about their care during labour and birth.
- 98% of women had confidence and trust in our staff during labour and birth.
- 94% of women felt they were given enough support for mental health during pregnancy, with 91% also feeling they received enough information in hospital after birth.
- 90% of women found their partner was able to stay with them as long as they wanted.
Overall, the Trust also ranked 9th nationally for score improvement compared with the 2024 CQC maternity survey, reflecting significant progress across multiple areas.
The results of this latest maternity survey follows hot-on-the-heels of the improved ‘good’ rating awarded to the Trust’s maternity services in 2025. The rating recognises the significant service improvements made following the previous inspection, reflecting the dedication and hard work of maternity teams in delivering high-quality, safe and compassionate care for women, babies and families.
Julie Dawes, Chief Nurse at Hampshire Hospitals, said: “We are delighted that this year’s CQC maternity survey reflects such strong confidence in the care we provide. These results, alongside the improvements highlighted following CQC’s recent inspection and ‘Good’ rating, highlight the dedication and compassion our maternity teams show every single day. I’m incredibly proud of the difference they continue to make for women, babies and families across our hospitals.
“While it’s encouraging to see such positive feedback, there is always more to do, and although we may not always get everything right, we are committed to continuing to make progress and keep learning and improving our services. We know how important it is that women feel safe, supported and listened to throughout their maternity journey – we will keep working to make sure we consistently deliver the high‑quality care they deserve.”
