Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (HHFT) staff across Andover, Basingstoke and Winchester have been recognised at the HHFT People Awards, with this year’s winners announced following a glamorous ceremony held earlier this month.

The HHFT People Awards celebrate the truly remarkable and inspiring things that Hampshire Hospitals staff do every day to care for patients and keep its hospitals running, going above and beyond to make the extra-ordinary a part of the care and services it provides.

With nearly 400 public and staff nominations submitted, 140 staff members were invited to attend the special evening of celebration hosted at Winchester Cathedral, recognising the finalists for each of the nine award categories.

All nine award winners, who work across a range of clinical and non-clinical roles, were revealed before being presented with their prize by a member of the trust’s executive team.

Among the evening’s winners was workforce development facilitator, Vanessa Mason, who took home the Inclusivity Award for her brilliant work within the trust’s Equality, Diversity and Inclusion programmes.

Mason, who is co-chair of HHFT’s BAME champions group, said: “It means the world and it’s a complete shock - it’s really quite humbling. I think the work that we’ve been doing is really personal and it adds to a sense of belonging for staff and colleagues, so it’s really humbling to be at the forefront of that.”

HHFT People Awards winners:

  • CARE Award – Corporate: Emergency Preparedness, Resilience & Response (EPRR) Team
  • CARE Award – Family & Clinical Support: Maureen Cummins – PA to the paediatric senior management team
  • CARE Award – Medicine: Bronwyn Flower – healthcare support worker
  • CARE Award – Surgery: Omiko Orji – senior ward sister

  • Innovation Award: Sam Jackson – virtual health hub clinical service lead

  • Patient Care and Experience Award: Katie Dodd – specialty coordinator & healthcare support worker

In addition to the award presentations, the event also featured an inspirational talk from the evening’s guest speaker, John McFall. Alongside working as a trauma and orthopaedics specialist registrar at HHFT, McFall is a former Paralympic medallist for Great Britain and the world’s first disabled astronaut following his appointment by the European Space Agency last November.

Alex Whitfield, chief executive for Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, said: “It was fantastic to celebrate so many of our wonderful colleagues at this year’s HHFT People Awards!

“We received almost 400 wonderful nominations from members of the public, patients and staff members and the awards evening was an opportunity to pay tribute to the remarkable work and achievements of our colleagues and teams – a huge congratulations to all those nominated, and, of course, to all our winners.”
