Results from the most recent national NHS Staff Survey show positive year-on-year improvements at Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, with staff reporting better overall engagement and improved morale.
The NHS Staff Survey is run annually across the country, with every member of staff invited to answer questions about what it is like working in the NHS and at their Trust. It measures the experiences of colleagues based on the seven themes within the NHS People Promise, as well as engagement and morale more generally. NHS trusts are then given individual results and benchmarked against others nationally based on the survey responses received.
In the 2024 Staff Survey, Hampshire Hospitals, which runs hospitals in Andover, Basingstoke and Winchester, improved its score in eight of the nine People Promise theme areas. This includes significant score increases in the themes ‘we each have a voice that counts’ and ‘we are always learning’ when compared to results from the previous year.
The Trust also saw a statistically significant improvement in engagement and morale following positive score increases in questions around colleagues feeling care of patients is the organisations top priority, recommending Hampshire Hospitals as a place to work and being happy with the standard of care provided by people at the Trust if a friend or relative required treatment.
Positivity of Hampshire Hospitals staff remained highest in the theme ‘we are compassionate and inclusive’ with a score of 7.2 out of 10 achieved. Within this theme’s question set, almost 90% of staff who responded to the Staff Survey shared that they felt their role made a direct everyday difference to patients and service users.
Overall, Hampshire Hospitals scored at or above the national average in all themes when compared to other acute trusts.
Alex Whitfield, chief executive at Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, said: “Over 4000 of our colleagues shared their thoughts and experiences of working at Hampshire Hospitals. These insights are so valuable in ensuring we’re creating a workplace where people can thrive, feel valued and well-supported.
“There are real positives in the feedback we’ve received this year, and it’s been encouraging to see strong improvements across so many of the People Promise themes, as well as engagement and morale more generally. These results reflect the strides we have made over the last 12 months to listen to feedback and take meaningful action.
“We know that we must continue build upon this and we still have lots to do to deliver for our colleagues. They work so hard, often under immense pressure, to provide outstanding care for our patients, each and every day.”
