The Acute oncology service organises rapid assessment or admissions with oncological emergencies and cancer complications across Hampshire Hospitals.  Our cancer teams work closely with all departments to ensure that any patient who has a cancer diagnosis or suspected cancer, but is admitted for another reason, is seen by a specialist within 24 hours.

We are a nurse led service that is supported by acute oncology consultants and specialist doctors. 

We work across Basingstoke and Winchester sites, Monday to Friday 8am - 6pm. 

Out of hours is emergency 24 hour Cancer Care Emergency Line on 07920 210289 which is covered by Wessex Ward located in Basingstoke and North Hampshire Hospital. 

 

Please call the 24 hour cancer care emergency line on 01962 825561 if you have any of the following or call 999 if told to do so: 

  • Chest pain
  • Difficulty in breathing
  • Generally unwell
  • Shivery episodes or flu like symptoms
  • Temperature above 37.5
  • Temperature below 36.0
  • Being sick
  • Diarrhea (more than 4 times in 24 hours) 
  • Bleeding or unusual bruising
  • Swollen and painful legs
  • Sore mouth that stops you from eating

You are at risk of developing malignant spinal cord compression if you have cancer that: 

  • Has already spread to your bones
  • Is at high risk of spreading to the bones, such as breast, lung or prostate cancer
  • Started in the spine
