Pregnancy following a previous loss or death of a baby is an emotional journey
The excitement of welcoming new life is often intertwined with lingering grief and fears from the past. Women and birthing people who are pregnant after experiencing a pregnancy loss face an increased risk of encountering another loss.
We have worked with MAMA Academy, The Safer Pregnancy Charity, to create Rainbow Wallets, a practical and emotional resource designed for families navigating a pregnancy after a previous loss.
MAMA Academy
Our Rainbow Wallets were thoughtfully co-created with valuable input from families and healthcare professionals to ensure they meet the real needs of those affected. They also use trauma-informed language to offer meaningful support during pregnancy after loss.
Building on the success of our Wellbeing Wallets, which have significantly contributed to reducing stillbirth rates, the Rainbow Wallet includes the Department of Health’s official safer pregnancy guidelines and seamlessly aligns with the NHS Saving Babies Lives Care Bundle. Importantly, the wallets are 100% recyclable.
Comprehensive and accessible support
The wallet contains essential information, including:
-
Monitoring fetal movements
-
Recognising signs and symptoms of complications
-
Self-advocacy tips
-
Anxiety toolkit
-
Mindfulness resources
To increase accessibility, the wallet includes QR codes that link to:
-
22 translated versions of safer pregnancy guidance
-
A pregnancy awareness video with BSL interpretation
-
An audio version for the visually impaired
-
A video introducing who we are and why we do what we do
For parents who prefer discretion during initial appointments, the wallet is designed to fold easily, fitting into a pocket or bag.
Thoughtful design for inclusivity
The wallets are branded in MAMA Academy's signature colours, chosen to support neurodivergent parents. We’ve also created a dedicated webpage for Black and Brown-skinned parents, offering tailored support and guidance. QR codes also link to web pages covering critical topics such as:
-
Mental health resources
-
Signs of newborn jaundice
-
Informed consent
-
Newborn screening
-
Safe sleeping guidance
Bite-sized information for flexibility
The information is presented in digestible sections, allowing parents to absorb details at their own pace. Webpages accessed via the QR codes feature dropdown menus, enabling users to easily select relevant topics without needing to scroll through sensitive content they may wish to avoid.
Peer-to-peer support
Our wallets also connect parents to a supportive community through:
-
A monitored Facebook peer support group
-
The MAMA Pregnancy Helpline—offering bereavement support from our team of midwives
Additionally, every page on our website can be translated into over 100 languages to support non-English-speaking parents.
