The unit is open between 8am and 6pm, Monday to Friday. When attending for your treatment, one of the nursing team will be responsible for administering your treatment and looking after you during your stay on the unit.
What to do if you have a problem
Chemotherapy is usually well tolerated, however some people will become unwell during the course of their treatment. Your doctor and the nursing staff will discuss the potential side effects of any treatment and will explain what to do should you encounter a problem. If you become unwell during the working day you can contact us via telephone. Outside of these hours you should attend A&E, it is important that you explain that you are receiving chemotherapy to the staff on your arrival.

For people who may experience hair loss we have a ‘Wig Lady’ who attends the unit and who can supply an excellent variety of wigs and other head coverings (hats and scarves etc). Partial payment for wigs is covered by the NHS for patients experiencing hair loss as a result of chemotherapy. Please ask a member of the team for further information.
We understand that receiving treatment for cancer can be very stressful, and we will be happy to discuss any concerns you may have. Additional support is available through a counselor who attends the Unit to support people with cancer and their families.
Referrals can be done by Basing Unit staff or self referral is possible via the Wessex Cancer Trust

This is a service provided by the Citizens Advice Bureau network in Hampshire, funded by Macmillan Cancer Support to provide a dedicated advice service to people affected by cancer (patients, relatives, carers). The service is provided across the whole of Hampshire and delivered by 10 regional caseworkers. Many of these caseworkers have outreaches in Hampshire hospitals including the RHCH Winchester.
Denise Cox is the local caseworker for this area. Denise visits the Nick Jonas unit every Wednesday from 1pm to 4 pm where she is able to see people by appointment, on a drop in basis (time permitting) or by phoning someone who is not able to come on a Wednesday. She is able to offer help and advice (non-clinical) on a vast range of issues: Welfare Benefits (including: complete benefit check, help to apply for all benefits identified, appeal adverse decisions etc), Employment (including: discrimination, sick pay issues, unfair dismissal etc), Debt (including: drawing up financial statement, negotiate with creditors, DRO and Bankruptcy etc), to name but a few. A patient can make an appointment while at the hospital by talking to staff on NJ or by contacting the service directly.
