The Microbiology and Infection Sciences Department offers a comprehensive range of tests including bacteriology, mycology, mycobacteriology, parasitology, virology, serology and molecular diagnostics.
The laboratory is based at Basingstoke and North Hampshire Hospital, serving all three Hampshire Hospital sites (Andover War Memorial Hospital, Basingstoke and North Hampshire Hospital and Royal Hampshire County Hospital) and primary care. External reference laboratories are used for specialist tests not offered locally. The Microbiology Department is a UKAS accredited Medical Laboratory No. 8082. The laboratory participates and performs well in national external quality assurance schemes and is accredited for training with the Institute of Biomedical Science and registration with the Health Care Professions Council and the Royal College of Pathologists.
Medical microbiologists are available, both during the day and out-of-hours, to give advice concerning the diagnosis, treatment, and monitoring of infectious diseases. Where appropriate, preliminary reports and results are phoned to the clinician concerned. Ward rounds and clinical consultations are conducted daily to review and offer advice on the management of inpatients with serious infections.
