The National Peritoneal Mesothelioma Multidisciplinary Team (NMDT) was established in 2016 by the Peritoneal Malignancy Institute (PMI), Basingstoke, to provide national specialist expertise in the diagnosis and management of peritoneal mesothelioma.

The NMDT supports consistent, evidence-based care for patients with this rare malignancy and contributes to national research, data collection, and service development to improve patient outcomes.
 

Purpose of the NMDT
The NMDT provides specialist multidisciplinary review and recommendations regarding:

  • Diagnosis and histopathological assessment
  • Surgical suitability
  • Systemic anti-cancer therapies (SACT)
  • Clinical trial eligibility
  • Supportive care and patient information

Please note that referrals are for specialist opinion and guidance only. Clinical responsibility for the patient remains with the referring team. Following discussion, written recommendations will be provided to support ongoing local management.

Patients considered potentially suitable for surgery will be offered an outpatient consultation at PMI Basingstoke.

NMDT Meeting Schedule
The NMDT meets twice monthly on the first and third Tuesday evening of each month.

The MDT provides recommendations regarding:

  • Surgical management
  • Systemic therapies
  • Clinical trial opportunities
  • Supportive care

Referral Deadline
Referrals must be received by 4:00 pm on the Thursday preceding the MDT meeting.

Re-discussion Requests
For patients requiring re-discussion, please submit an updated referral letter outlining any changes in clinical status, investigations, or treatment.

MDT Outcome
The outcome of the discussion will be communicated to the referring clinician. Please ensure that recommendations and treatment advice are discussed with the patient locally.

Information Required in the Referral Letter
Please include the following information:

  • Clinical Information
  • Asbestos Exposure History
  • Surgical and Endoscopic History and documents
  • Oncology Information
  • Radiology - Please send imaging and local radiology reports via the Image Exchange Portal (IEP): https://nww.iepservice.nhs.uk CT imaging with both oral and intravenous contrast is preferred. Positive oral contrast assists in assessing mesenteric and small bowel involvement by peritoneal disease.
  • Histology reports - Send H&E slides and all relevant tumour blocks by Special Delivery (rather than Recorded Delivery) to:

Histology Requirements for Malignant Peritoneal Mesothelioma
The following investigations should be performed locally prior to referral:

  • At least three mesothelial immunohistochemical markers:
    • Calretinin
    • CK5/6
    • WT1
    • D2-40 (podoplanin)
    • HBME1
  • BAP1 immunohistochemistry on cell block
  • Mib-1 / Ki-67 on cell block

 

Histology Requirements for Multicystic/Cystic Mesothelioma
The following investigations should be performed locally prior to referral:

  • At least three mesothelial immunohistochemical markers:
    • Calretinin
    • CK5/6
    • WT1
    • D2-40 (podoplanin)
    • HBME1
