We have bone densitometry (DEXA) facilities at Andover War Memorial Hospital.
A bone densitometry (or DEXA, Dual energy x-ray absorptiometry) scan is a simple method of detecting osteoporosis by measuring bone mineral density. You will be asked to lie on the couch and a small arm will pass over your body, the scanner is not enclosed.
Your GP or consultant will request the scan and you will be sent an appointment letter through the post.
There is no specific preparation required. You may be asked to change into a hospital gown for the scan. It may help if you wear loose fitting clothes with no metal on them.
The scanner uses x-rays which carry a small health risk however, a DEXA scan uses far less radiation than standard x-rays. Despite this it is still not recommended for women who may be pregnant so it is important you let us know before your appointment if you think you are or may be pregnant.
Your GP or consultant will receive the results. They may write to you or arrange an appointment to see you.
