Specialist interests

I am a therapeutic endoscopist, specialising in colonoscopy and gastroscopy. I undertake a range of procedures including: banding of varices, endoscopy with appropriate therapy in acute upper GI haemorrhage, oesophageal dilatation and stenting, PEG insertion, NJ tube insertion, APC to bleeding lesions, injection sclerotherapy, polypectomy, colonic stenting.

I am the endoscopist responsible for colonoscopy undertaken in the Bowel Cancer Screening Programme, which required specialist accreditation from the Joint Advisory Group on GI endoscopy. Dr Rebecca Saich is the Foundation Trust lead on this project.

I have special interest in viral hepatitis. I work with a Hepatitis C clinical nurse specialist to provide anti-viral therapy in chronic hepatitis C. We have established a treatment programme for patients with hepatitis C and co-infected patients with HIV or Hepatitis B in combination with Hepatitis C. More recently I have set up a treatment and monitoring programme for patients with chronic hepatitis B. I also run a clinic in the Haemophilia Centre, specialising in caring for and treating Haemophilia patients with viral hepatitis.

I am also a general hepatologist and see patients with a wide variety of liver conditions in my specialist Liver/Upper GI cancer clinic.

In my general gastroenterology clinic, I see the whole spectrum of GI disease, including irritable bowel syndrome, inflammatory bowel disease, coeliac disease and many others.

I lead the Upper GI cancer multi-disciplinary team, and attend the Central South Coast Cancer Network meetings as the Foundation Trust’s representative. I see patients with oesophago-gastric and pancreatic cancer in my specialist liver/upper GI cancer clinic. The team liaises with tertiary centres around the region to optimise and tailor care to individual patients. The local team consists of gastroenterologists, medical oncologists, radiologists, pathologists, a clinical nurse specialist, dietician and MacMillan nurses.
