Professor Matthew Inada-Kim, Consultant Acute Physician
Professor Matthew Inada Kim is one of Hampshire Hospitals' leading acute consultants. Based at our Royal Hampshire County Hospital site, he played a central role in establishing the Trust’s acute medical department.
Matt is one of the UK’s leading experts on sepsis and in 2024 was appointed to one of only 18 national clinical director positions as National Clinical Director for Infection management and Antimicrobial Resistance, having held the position of National Clinical Lead for Deterioration and Sepsis for NHS England since 2017. Matt also holds an honorary role with with the UK Health Security Agency.
In 2011, Matt spent a year in the United States as part of the Harkness Fellowship, spending time at the Harvard Institute of Healthcare Improvement where he gained unparalleled insight into large scale national and local policy development particularly around the Affordable Care Act, sepsis, community healthcare provision and hospital readmissions.
Professor Inada-Kim earned his medical degree at King’s College London and trained at Kings College London; working at University College, The Royal London & St Bartholomews and Whipps Cross hospitals before joining Hampshire Hospitals 2009.
Matt is leading efforts to develop an infection management approach to AMR, sepsis and infection prevention to improve outcomes/costs through optimising pathways, diagnostics and data.
He leads/has led:
- Research in COVID proving that oxygen saturations at home predict survival/intensive care
- COVID oximetry@home- 1.2 million oximeters & coverage of England in 38 days.
- Shared globally via the World Health Organisation & 18 countries including India, Brazil, Australia & Singapore.
- Developed/led acute respiratory infection hubs seeing 730,000 patients in 4 months.
- Codeveloped/led the NHS implementation of NEWS2 and Deterioration CQUIN in 114 acute trusts.
- Standardised national methodology for assessing the burden of infections/sepsis.
- A hatrick of HSJ awards in Infection/Sepsis, Deterioration and safety.
