Cancer services is made up of 3 units, The Ark Rainbow unit based in BNHH and Nick Jonas ward based in RHCH and The Wessex ward based in BNHH (inpatient ward).
Our team is built up by a dedicated team providing innovative, consultant led treatments for a wide range of cancers including breast, bowel, gynaecological, haematological, lung, gastrointestinal and prostate in a calm environment. Understanding that patient and family involvement are essential components of holistic care, the nurses provide patient/family education and support during each individual’s unique cancer journey.
The Oncology Unit offers personalised care that meets the highest standards in cancer treatment. Our family-centred approach to care recognises the impact of a cancer diagnosis on patients and family members alike.
The dedicated Oncology nurses are skilled in dealing with symptom management, whether due to the side effects of treatment or the disease itself.
The 24 hour care on Wessex ward is provided by a multidisciplinary team dedicated to ensuring the patients have the best possible stay on the ward. We also carry out certain procedures on Wessex ward, such as bone marrow biopsies.
Since the start of covid there have been a lot of changes to our service, we have joined the two wards as one, moved off site to Sarum Road Hospital, restricted visitors and more.
This no doubt has caused insecurity and stress to all involved, as a unit we have done everything we can to keep our service users safe. As much as we as a Trust have been disrupted by covid we appreciate that the implications this has had for our service users has been somewhat overwhelming at times, we would just like to thank everyone for their support, cooperation and resilience through these tough times.
We are hoping to return to ‘normal’ in the upcoming months with Nick Jonas Ward re-opening and Basing Unit operating from the Firs.
