Cardiology

We have very close links to the Royal Brompton Hospital (RBH) in London.

Mr Tony de Souza is a cardiac surgeon at RBH and has clinics every month in Basingstoke.  He operates on 150-200 patients from North Hampshire every year.

Dr Jonathan Clague is an electrophysiologist at RBH who sees patients quarterly at Basingstoke.  Ablation procedures are performed at RBH.

Dr John Bolodeoku is a specialist in abnormalities of lipid metabolism (cholesterol), and he also consults monthly within the cardiology department.

We see people referred in by their GPs with all forms of suspected heart disease in outpatient clinics. We look after inpatients; perform diagnostic coronary angiograms and angioplasties. Since January 2009 we have provided a 24 hour, seven day a week primary PCI service. In 2013 we expanded our pacemaker and devices service and now implant pacemakers and complex devices such as implantable defibrillators and biventricular pacemakers.  We provide access to thousands of non-invasive cardiac investigations.

Heart disease is still the biggest killer in the Western world, and the borough of Basingstoke and Deane has a higher incidence of heart disease than the rest of rural Hampshire. We are determined to see that our local population has access to the best care possible.

Over the last 10 years we have seen a significant fall in the numbers of people dying from heart disease and in the number of people suffering heart attacks.  We want to see this continue.

Most of our work is done on the Basingstoke site but we also run outreach Heart Failure and Secondary Prevention Clinics in the cardiac rehabilitation centre in Alton

Within the hospital, we look after patients on CCU and the Cardiology Ward, but most of our outpatient work and the procedures are done in the hospital’s Sherborne building. 

We also provide inpatients services on Clarke ward at Royal Hampshire County Hospital and outpatient services at Andover War Memorial Hospital and at Royal Hampshire County Hospital.

First Outpatient Appointment

The comprehensive cardiac rehabilitation service operates across 4 sites: Alton Cardiac Rehabilitation Centre; North Hampshire Hospital; Royal Hampshire County Hospital and Andover War Memorial Hospital.  It is delivered by an experienced team of cardiac rehab specialist Nurses, Physiotherapists, and Exercise Instructors and covers all aspects of the rehab pathway.  Inpatients are assessed and given advice in CCU after their heart attack or stenting procedure; followed up by telephone and then offered an individually tailored outpatient or home exercise programme.  Referrals are also taken from GPs and tertiary centres for valve and bypass patients; and stable heart failure patients from the Heart Clinic wishing to attend the rehab programme.  A Secondary Prevention Clinic led by Associate Specialist Cardiologist Dr Jason Glover runs alongside the Alton & North Hampshire Hospital rehab clinics. 

The cardiac rehabilitation service is commissioned by the North & West Hampshire Clinical Commissioning Groups and has recently achieved certification until 2019 by the British Association of Cardiac Rehabilitation & Prevention and the National Audit of Cardiac Rehabilitation as meeting the national standards. 

After completion of the outpatient cardiac rehabilitation programme, patients are encouraged to continue lifelong exercise independently or in  Phase IV cardiac rehab classes locally.
