Basingstoke and North Hampshire Hospital

Maternity tours suspended

Tours of the maternity units at all three of our hospitals are currently suspended as a precaution to help prevent the spread of coronavirus.

Welcome to Basingstoke and North Hampshire Hospital maternity service.

We are responsible for approximately 3000 babies being delivered each year and have a team of obstetricians, paediatricians, anaesthetists, midwives and maternity support workers who pride themselves in supporting choice, whilst being focused on providing the safest possible options for your pregnancy.

The maternity services include an early pregnancy assessment unit (EPAU), ultrasound department, antenatal and postnatal clinics (located either within the hospital or community setting), antenatal and postnatal wards, maternity day assessment unit (MDAU) and delivery suite.  Specialist midwifery services are available to support women with additional needs.

For many local mothers and babies the care they will receive will be midwifery led.  Mothers have the option to birth their baby either in the community or the acute setting (home or hospital).  The delivery suite has two homely birthing suites, one of which has a birthing pool.  A small number of women will require their care to be planned in conjunction with an obstetric consultant. In these circumstances our approach to care actively promotes a positive birth experience for those women whose pregnancies may develop complications.

Basingstoke and North Hampshire Hospital is a district teaching hospital.  Midwifery and medical students may be involved in your care following a discussion with you.

Childbirth is a unique experience for each individual woman. The dignity and rights of mothers, babies and their families will be respected at all times. We will work in partnership with women and their families to facilitate a positive birth experience in a supportive, sensitive, safe and friendly environment.
