Medical photography, also referred to as clinical photography, is sometimes used as a visual method of recording patients’ conditions. The photographs can be used for diagnosis or for documenting a patient’s condition during various stages of their treatment.

Clinical photographers are qualified professional healthcare scientists specialising in the photography of patients. They work to standardised guidelines, protocols and codes of conduct set out by the NHS and Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and are registered medical illustrators on the Academy of Healthcare Science (AHCS) register which is accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA). The professional body for medical illustrators is the Institute of Medical Illustrators (IMI) www.imi.org.uk.

Clinical images (photographs or video) can be included in a patient’s health care record and may be used for diagnosis, monitoring the patient’s condition and/or planning further treatment. These images may also be used for clinical teaching or education but only with the patient’s appropriate level of consent.

Medical photography will take place in the medical photography studio which is located in the lilac area of main outpatients (near orthodontics) at Basingstoke and North Hampshire Hospital. However, we sometimes need to take photographs while patients are on the ward or in other departments within the hospital.

  • Your consultant or healthcare provider will have explained to you why they want the photographs taken.
  • Please bring your appointment or clinic letter as well as your medical photography request and consent forms with you.
  • If you wish, you can bring a friend or relative with you for support.
  • Appointments usually take no longer than 20 minutes, but this will depend upon what photographs have been requested.

Medical Photography and Illustration is located in the Main Out-Patients Department, near Orthodontics, Lilac Area 1. However, sometimes, photographs may need to be taken whilst patients are on the ward or in other departments within the Trust’s hospitals.
