What we do

Our aim is to provide high quality gastroenterology care to the local population. Emerging technologies allow early diagnosis of cancer, increasing the potential for cure. In advanced cancers, there are many therapeutic options which can improve quality of life.

A full range of gastroenterology services is provided including:

  • general and specialist GI outpatient clinics
  • diagnostic and therapeutic upper and lower GI endoscopy
  • diagnostic endoscopic ultrasound
  • therapeutic ERCP
  • oesophageal manometry and pH studies
  • capsule endoscopy
  • inpatient care of general GI problems.

Our team care for patients with a broad range of diseases affecting the entire gastrointestinal tract, liver, pancreas and biliary tree. Non-malignant conditions of the gastrointestinal tract often affect young people and can be very debilitating. Our aim is to diagnose and manage these conditions while striving to maintain normal life and work patterns for our patients.

In particular, we have expertise in diagnosing and managing:

  • inflammatory bowel disease (IBD)
  • coeliac disease
  • neuroendocrine tumours
  • biliary tract disease
  • chronic liver disease (including alcohol related liver disease, autoimmune liver disease and metabolic liver disease)
  • viral hepatitis
  • functional bowel disorders

We also support local and regional services in diagnosing and managing oesophagogastric cancer, cholangiocarcinoma, hepatocellular carcinoma, pancreatic cancer, small bowel tumours and colorectal cancer. We are part of the National Bowel Cancer Screening Programme, providing diagnostic and therapeutic colonoscopy to the local screening population.

In addition to providing inpatient services for gastroenterology patients, we also provide nutritional support and diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy services for all departments.

We have advanced expertise in the use of biological agents for inflammatory bowel disease (Crohns disease and colitis) with one of the largest numbers of patients receiving these treatments in the south of England. We run a hepatitis treatment centre and are involved in several national trials of various liver tumours. We are a referral centre for neuroendocrine (carcinoid) tumours of the gut and liver.

We provide outpatient services in the main outpatient department at Basingstoke and North Hampshire Hospital. In addition, clinics are held at Alton Community Hospital and in the Haemophilia Centre. Dr John Ramage also holds tertiary referral clinics at Kings College Hospital in London.

Our specialty inpatient ward is E1, although we care for patients on all wards within the hospital, including the intensive care and high dependency units. Endoscopy services are provided in the DTC.

The gastroenterologists are active members of the upper and lower GI Cancer and hepatobiliary multi-disciplinary teams.

Specialist inflammatory bowel disease services are provided by Dr Saich in partnership with the colorectal surgical team and the GI radiologists and histo-pathologists and supported by Sister Prosser.

Dr Ramage and Dr Brooks hold specialist clinics for liver disease, viral hepatitis, iron deficiency and upper GI cancer, supported by Sister Prosser (viral hepatitis) and  Sister King (iron deficiency).

Dr Ramage provides a regional tertiary referral service for neuro-endocrine tumours, supported by Sister King.
