It consists of the following specialist areas:

  • The Basing Unit - the out-patient area
  • The Wessex Ward – in-patient facility

All inpatient wards at Hampshire Hospitals have adopted John’s Campaign, which allows the carers of patients with dementia to stay in hospital with their loved ones if they wish.

Outpatient chemotherapy and supportive therapy is administered on the Basing Unit. This is located on F Floor of the main hospital. The Unit is open from 08.30- 18.00 Monday to Friday and once a month on a Saturday from 08.30 to 16.30.

There are 3 beds and 13 chairs where treatment is administered.  The Basing Unit has 7 consulting rooms where outpatient consultations take place.  There is also a procedure room for minor procedures and a quiet room.

Beverages are provided via a vending machine in the waiting room. Sandwiches are provided at lunchtime and we have a number of volunteers that help with refreshments.

Parking

Parking at Basingstoke Hospital is via a ticket and barrier system. People making multiple journeys for cancer treatment are eligible for free parking. An application for this will be provided by one of the cancer team.

Information and Support

People undergoing chemotherapy will be provided with information prior to starting treatment. A pre chemotherapy information session lasting about 1 hour allows staff to provide information and answer any questions.

Written information is provided in a variety of forms, but for general information we recommend Macmillan Cancer Support. Relevant booklets will be provided prior to chemotherapy but further resources can be accessed via Macmillan Cancer Support on 0808 808 00 00 or www.macmillan.org.uk

The hospital health information point in the front entrance can also provide information and support on a wide range of topics including cancer.

There is a 24 hour contact number that will be given to anyone receiving chemotherapy. This allows 24 hour contact with nursing staff to provide advice and assessment of symptoms related to chemotherapy.

Other Services

For people who may experience hair loss we have a ‘Wig Lady’ who comes to the Basing Unit twice a week and can supply an excellent variety of wigs and other head coverings (hats and scarves etc). Partial payment for wigs is covered by the NHS for patients experiencing hair loss as a result of chemotherapy.

We also have two counselors who come to the Basing Unit to support people with cancer and their families. Referrals can be done by Basing Unit staff or self referral is possible via the Wessex Cancer Trust
