Our ambition
We will achieve financial sustainability through long-term improvements to how we provide care, not short-term fixes. By working more efficiently and effectively, reducing unwarranted variation, making better use of our estate and technology, and improving environmental sustainability, we will deliver high-quality care within available budgets and resources.
All improvements will be judged by whether they improve outcomes, safety and patient experience, productivity and value, with our performance benchmarked openly against comparable NHS peers.
By 2031, we will be financially sustainable, with every pound delivering the greatest possible benefit for patients and communities. We will have achieved a measurable reduction in our environmental impact and be well placed to respond to future challenges, while continuing to improve quality, safety and patient experience.
Measuring our success
We will measure our success through our ability to provide high-quality care
in a way that is financially, operationally and environmentally sustainable.
This includes improving productivity, living within the resources available to
us, reducing avoidable readmissions, and reducing our carbon footprint in line
with the NHS net zero ambition. The full set of measures associated with this
ambition can be found here.
Objective 7: We will use our resources wisely to support better care
By 2031, we will be living within our means year after year, while continuing to invest in better, safer and more joined-up care. Every decision about how we spend public money will be guided by the benefits it brings for patients, staff and local communities.
-
Simplifying how services are organised so we make better use of our money, people, time and technology, and focus resources where they make the biggest difference.
-
Making it easier for patients to book appointments and receive care, including through digital tools, while helping staff spend more time on what matters most.
-
Balancing today’s operational pressures with the long-term changes needed to create a more sustainable NHS for the future.
-
Planning across several financial years to ensure that our plans deliver sustainable change and deliver this strategy. By living within our means, we will be able to invest in our future.
-
Providing staff with the information they need to make value-based decisions every day, ensuring every public pound is spent wisely.
-
Improving productivity and efficiency by learning from others and working with partners where this gives better value for patients, staff and communities.
-
Using our skills, expertise and services to bring in additional income where appropriate, so we can invest more in improving care.
-
Working with our charity partners to invest charitable funding where it can have the greatest impact on patient care, staff wellbeing and innovation.
Objective 8: We will ensure people receive the same high standard of care
By 2031, everyone who uses our services will experience consistent, high-quality care that is organised around their needs. We will be a learning organisation that listens to patients, staff and communities, using insight, evidence and best practice to continually improve. By embedding a culture of learning and continuous improvement, we will reduce unwarranted variation and deliver more consistent, accessible and patient-centred care across Hampshire Hospitals.
-
Using feedback, insight and experience from patients, children, young people, families, carers and staff to understand what is working well and where we can do better.
-
Learning from best practice both within Hampshire Hospitals and elsewhere, to make sure care is consistent.
-
Understanding our local communities and their health needs through meaningful engagement, insight and population health data, ensuring services across Mid and North Hampshire are designed around the people who use them and helping to reduce inequalities in access, experience and outcomes.
-
Making information accessible and easy to understand, helping people make informed decisions about their care and receive a more consistent experience of care.
-
Making it easier for people to access and move through services, reducing delays, improving coordination and creating more reliable care pathways.
Objective 9: We will use our buildings, estate and technology to support future care
By 2031, we will be ready for the future and responding to the changing needs of our communities. We will use our buildings, facilities and technology more effectively to support modern care and meet future service needs. Investment will focus on what matters most to patients and staff while reducing our environmental impact, helping to create a healthier future for both people and planet.
-
Making better use of our buildings, facilities and technology, supporting modern care and preparing for future service needs.
-
Investing in what matters most to patients and staff, including improving older buildings where needed.
-
Developing our estate to support care closer to home, enabling services to be delivered in the most appropriate settings.
-
Using our buildings and facilities to support greater collaboration between services, improving joined-up care.
-
Making sure our estate supports the use of digital technology to enable new ways of delivering care and improving efficiency.
-
Completing an estates master plan across all three hospitals so we can plan how and where our services should be located to offer the most effective use of our estate.
-
Reducing our environmental impact and carbon footprint, contributing to a more sustainable future and supporting the NHS Net Zero target by 2040.
